Compatibility
Compatibility through Saju
Enter two birth dates and times to get five compatibility scores. The guide below explains how to read them.
Why animal-sign matching alone is not enough
Animal-sign matching, as people usually mean it, is a short rule. It checks whether two Year branches form a Triple Harmony or a Clash. That is enough for a joke between friends. It is hard to base a decision about romance, marriage or a business partner on that one line. Two people born in the same year can still have different Day Masters and Day branches, because their months, days and hours differ. The points where a real relationship rubs usually come from the Day pillar (the person closest to you) and the balance of Authority, Expression and Wealth energy.
A Triple Harmony (for example Pig-Rabbit-Goat or Tiger-Horse-Dog) is often read as an element growing stronger when the animals meet. That gives a sense of fitting well. Six Clashes are often read as differences in pace and values that bring more movement and more arguments. Even a clash can become a growth couple when the two of you support each other with complementary elements. Even a harmony can grow the same weakness in both of you if only one element is in excess. Instead of labeling a pairing lucky or unlucky, it is more practical to ask which clash keeps repeating.
Day Master and complementary elements
One pattern that makes a relationship easier is when the elements support each other. If a person with strong Wood has some weak Fire, expression comes alive. If a person with sharp Metal meets a suitable amount of Fire, speech softens. In the opposite case, when both sides keep repeating the same restraining relationship, nagging and pushback tend to become the default in daily life. Try applying the support and restraint cycles in the Five Elements guide to both Day Masters. The theme of your arguments can look surprisingly simple.
The Love tab shows how one chart handles relationships: through expression (Expression energy), responsibility and attention (Authority energy) and practical tasks (Wealth energy). Run an analysis for both of you and compare your Day Masters and current Luck Pillars. It helps you tell apart "am I sensitive this year?" from "is my partner in a busy Luck Pillar?". Reading the quality of the period and adjusting your plans lowers the cost of conflict more than trying to change the other person.
Healthy limits for using compatibility
Compatibility can never be a tool for justifying violence, distrust or addiction. "Our Saju does not match" is the phrase most often used to close a conversation. In an unhealthy relationship, safety comes before any Saju reading. A business partnership also does not rest on complementary personalities alone. Ownership shares, cash flow and decision rules need to be in writing.
The calculator at the top of this page overlays two charts on one screen and gives scores. The five scores are reference values built from differences in Day Master, Luck Pillar and Wealth energy. They are not a basis for deciding on a marriage, a breakup or a partnership. For the big picture of animal-sign relationships, see the 12 animal signs guide.
Family compatibility is different from romance. Parents and children do not choose each other. So instead of declaring "we don't fit", turn the difference in decision style (fast Fire versus slow Earth) into rules for schedules and money. For siblings and friends, similar Peer energy gives strong loyalty, but you may compete for the same spot, so sharing roles keeps the bond lasting. Compatibility with a boss or a colleague tends to show up as a difference in the temperature of Authority and Expression energy. Agreeing on whether to report in writing or in person has a faster effect than any Saju remedy. In a partnership, the profit-sharing clause comes before Day Master compatibility.
Rushing into marriage in a year of harmony is the same impatience as declaring a breakup in a year of clash. In a year when your Luck Pillar changes, mood swings can grow, so leave a short period to catch your breath before legal or financial decisions. If violence, extortion or repeated silence appear, it is a safety issue, not a Saju issue. If you need to, ask for help from the people around you and from professional organizations first. Even in a year with a high Love score, a relationship becomes a debt if you skip your partner's consent, boundaries and finances. A score is a thermometer, not a permit. Spreading compatibility talk without your partner's consent, or pressuring a relationship with a score, is not what Saju is for. Your partner's chart is close to their personal information.
