The 12 Zodiac Animals: Temperament and Flow
Your zodiac animal is the Earthly Branch of your birth year (the year branch). It's familiar, but it's only one character of your chart. You need your Day Master and the other three pillars to get the full story.
How your animal differs from your full chart
In Korea, the zodiac animal is the Saju idea people hear most. "What's your animal?" really means "What's your year branch?" The twelve Earthly Branches are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The cycle moves one step each year. 2020 was the Metal Rat, 2024 the Wood Dragon and 2026 the Fire Horse.
The catch: your year branch alone can't define your personality or luck. Two Rats with a different month, day and hour have completely different charts. Depending on whether your Day Master is Fire or Metal, the Rat's "cleverness" might show up as business sense or as anxious overthinking. That's why we offer the animal guide as a beginner's map, while the real reading calculates all four pillars. The notes below describe common tendencies when your year branch is that animal. Your own chart always comes first.
Branches form a web of relationships: triple alliances, seasonal alliances, clashes, friction and drains. For example, Tiger, Horse and Dog are often grouped as a Fire triple alliance. Monkey, Rat and Dragon form a Water triple alliance. Animals that face each other, like Rat and Horse or Ox and Goat, clash. They're often said to differ in pace and values. The compatibility page picks up the relationship side of this.
Rat
Linked to the start of night, when Water energy runs deep. Rats tend to read the room fast, remember a lot and move when they spot a chance. With money, they value information and timing, and pair well with saving and side hustles that patch small gaps. Too much suspicion can delay starts or make them test people before trusting. In love, smart conversation and a safe private space matter. Careers often overlap with "reading the flow": distribution, finance operations, research, planning and online business. In Horse years or Luck Pillars (the clashing animal), moves and job changes often become the theme. If your chart already has a lot of Water, rest and practicing deep focus on one thing help.
Ox
Earth that builds strength underground. Diligence, patience and sticking to a chosen path are strengths. Money tends to come less from one big win and more from turning repeated work and trust into assets. When stubbornness turns toxic, they may lose out by not updating their methods as times change. In love and family, they show care through actions more than words. Adding a few words helps, so partners don't think they "don't care". Good career fits: manufacturing, accounting, farming and food, public-sector work and long-term project management. When a Goat clash arrives, health routines, property and family roles often come up. If there's too much Earth, walks and travel (Water-like flow) give you room to breathe.
Tiger
Spring Wood, the energy that opens a forest. Tigers have the nerve to start things, and find injustice hard to ignore. Leadership stands out, but their speed can skip practical details. Money ties into big launches. A partner who handles the management side helps results stay steady. In love, passion and a need for independence live side by side, so respect without control is key. Good fits: running planning, education, forestry and environment, sports and early-stage startup leadership. When the Tiger-Snake-Monkey friction stacks up, schedules may tangle and slips of the tongue may grow, so keep contracts in writing. If Wood runs high, burn it off with exercise and consciously add Metal's rules (deadlines and budgets).
Rabbit
Gentle Wood, a branch where courtesy and taste come first. Rabbits have a gift for avoiding conflict and making spaces beautiful. Money tends to flow from branding, design, brokering and turning trust between people into income. Slow decisions can let chances slip by, so practicing choices with deadlines is the homework. In love, mood and consideration matter, and one harsh line can sting for a long time. Careers often link to art, fashion, counseling, HR, content and real estate brokerage. A Rooster clash can make values and work reviews feel touchy. Use your Wood energy, but keep a Metal-style notebook that sums up each decision in one line.
Dragon
Damp Earth, a symbol of change and scale. Dragons have big pride and big ideals, so staying on "just an ordinary path" for long is hard. Money can arrive in one big swing at a turning point, but the swings are wide, so keep a cash buffer. In love, pride can make the first apology tough. Redefine pride as something you "protect together" and fights shrink. Good fits: planning, public works and infrastructure, water and land industries, investment review and large events. A Dog clash is often read as a change of surroundings, and the Pig drain as mood swings. Earth is the center here, so keep your schedule and body grounded, and use Water and Wood-style learning to break ideals into realistic steps.
Snake
Summer Fire, known for deep observation and strategy. Snakes look past the surface and hold their words until enough information gathers. Money pairs well with fields where expertise and discretion are the value: research, medicine, analysis, security and brand strategy. Overthinking slows action, so small reveals, like sharing a draft, help the most. In love, they want depth and prefer trust built over time to casual dates. A Pig clash often shows up as clashing values or daily rhythms. If your chart has lots of Fire, sleep, water and speaking less help cool things down. With both Expression energy and Support energy, "deep communication" like writing or teaching becomes a career weapon.
Horse
Midday Fire: speed, recognition and going straight ahead. Horses easily become the mood-maker and struggle to sit still. Money fits work where visibility is opportunity: sales, performing, sports, media and on-site leadership. Impulse spending and overestimating stamina are the traps. In love, they want the spark to last, so planning little events into daily life protects the relationship. In Rat clash years, moving, changing jobs and rethinking relationships often become the theme. If your chart already has plenty of Fire, consciously add Water (rest, journaling) and set Metal's rules as numbers (a budget cap). When a Water Luck Pillar arrives, learning can pay more than speed.
Goat
Close to dry Earth: gentle, but centered. Goats value harmony, keep their manners and often play mediator in groups. Money is steadiest when it comes through trust, referrals and repeat customers. Not being able to say no can pile up emotional labor and wear down health. In love and family, practice protecting your own time and money first, so sacrifice doesn't become the default. Good fits: education, social services, hospitality, design, food and team coordination. An Ox clash often looks like stubborn versus stubborn, so split roles in writing. If Earth runs high, Wood (walks, learning something new) gives you air.
Monkey
Metal in motion: wit, skilled hands and quick judgment. Monkeys pick up new tools and trends fast, and get through crises with jokes and skill. Money pairs with variable income like tech fees, trading and project-based work. When focus scatters, there's lots of talk and missed deadlines, so pick one signature result per quarter. In love, they enjoy ongoing fun and excitement, which partners may misread as "not serious". Repeat small, serious promises to build trust. A Tiger clash can turn into a pride battle. If Metal runs high, Fire (warm words in front of people) takes the edge off.
Rooster
Refined Metal that cares about polish and class. A great match for people who value detail, manners and hard numbers. Money often comes from professional credentials, brand management and work where quality sets the price. A sharp critical eye can lower team morale, so practice separating facts from requests when giving feedback. In love, looks and manners attract them, but over time, sincerity scores higher. A Rabbit clash often shows up as clashing taste and values. Metal-strong charts loosen up socially when they schedule Wood (rest, nature, flexible plans) and Fire (praise, the warmth of speaking up). When a Water Luck Pillar comes, study and renewing credentials can become the theme.
Dog
The Earth left as a fire dies down: loyalty and watchfulness together. Dogs try to see a job through to the end and can't stand injustice. Money tends to be steady in "protecting" work like public service, security and management. When worry leads, they question every chance and start late. In love, loyalty is a strength, but jealousy and nagging can turn toxic. Agree on free time for your partner. Good fits: public sector, legal work, security, HR, pet and food safety, and project audits. A Dragon clash brings changes of surroundings. When the Tiger-Horse-Dog triple alliance opens, recognition and visibility can grow. With lots of Earth and Fire, sleep, water and a worry list with numbers (only real to-dos) help.
Pig
Winter water: an image of acceptance, intuition and abundance. Pigs trust people easily, make spaces warm and often have clear taste in art, food and rest. Money comes through connections and gut feel, but loose boundaries can turn co-signing or impulse spending into holes. In love, they're full of affection and warmth. Draw lines so not saying no doesn't pull you into love triangles or emotional labor. Good fits: hospitality, food service, art, social services, logistics, counseling and content. A Snake clash is often read as values and health rhythms, and the Pig-Rabbit-Goat triple alliance as a Wood growth theme. If Water runs high, Earth (a budget, a schedule) grounds the boat. If Fire is low, morning sunlight and light exercise boost follow-through.
Connecting your animal to your full reading
Enter your birth date and time on the home page and you'll see not just your year branch, but your month, day and hour branches, too. Even with a Horse year branch, a Rat day branch can mean outward speed and inner calculation living side by side. That's why sizing up friends by zodiac columns alone misses the mark. Check your year branch's element in the Five Elements guide, then layer it with your Day Master's support and restraint cycles. For compatibility, the relationship between Day Masters and the spouse palace matters more than animal clashes and harmonies.
Buzz like "my animal is unlucky this year" often exaggerates a clash between that year's energy and your year branch. A clash is also an energy of moving and adjusting. If you're already planning a job change or a move, it can be the tailwind that gets you going. If you need stability that year, slow down on contracts, big money and drastic decisions. Mukwoon's timing scores look at the climate of Luck Pillars, so check the 10-year texture before any single year's trend.
Month and hour branches: the characters behind your animal
Your year branch is your social first impression and family story. Your month branch is closer to how you work, and your hour branch to your daily rhythm and later-life interests. You might be called a Horse, but with an Ox month branch, outward speed and inner grit share one body. A Rabbit with a Tiger hour branch may find drive at night or in creative side projects. Read the four pillars on the home screen from top to bottom, and you'll see how thin a "zodiac character" really is.
A common explanation is that harmonies between branches smooth relationships and clashes make you move. But a harmony can become an unhealthy attachment, and a clash can be a needed breakup or graduation. Instead of asking "lucky or unlucky?", ask "what's moving?" Whether it's your job, your home or your role in a relationship changes how you respond.
Reading 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse, with your animal
2026 is often described as a year when Fire energy shows on the surface. For Rats, the Horse's clashing animal, moving, visibility and schedule clashes tend to be the theme. Tigers and Dogs, who share the Tiger-Horse-Dog triple alliance with the Horse, may see recognition and speed grow. This is a sketch that ignores your own chart and Luck Pillars. In a chart that already has lots of Fire, the same Horse year can feel like overheating. In a chart short on Fire, it can feel like a spotlight on new chances.
When you read a year's energy, don't stop at year-branch clashes and harmonies. Also check whether that year's Heavenly Stem (Yang Fire, in 2026) feeds or restrains your Day Master. If it feeds it, self-expression tends to flow. If it restrains it, evaluation and responsibility may grow. For a precise overlap, it's safer to read this page side by side with the timing and wealth tabs in your Saju reading. Trendy yearly forecasts sometimes play up fear for clicks. For big money, co-signing or impulsive job changes, look at your own chart and your actual cash situation together.
Practical notes by animal
For Rat, Snake and Pig, information and intuition are assets, so set a rule never to bet money on rumors without a source. For Ox, Dragon, Goat and Dog, trust is the asset, so writing your "no" sentences ahead of time cuts emotional labor. For Tiger, Horse and Monkey, speed is the weapon, so a 24-hour wait before signing filters out impulses. For Rabbit and Rooster, polish is the weapon, so a rhythm of publishing at 80% and then fixing opens growth. These notes aren't zodiac stereotypes. They're habit ideas that patch the gaps each branch tends to leave when it runs too strong.
Customs like timing a baby for a certain animal, or choosing which direction to move by your animal, can be fun cultural play. But they can't beat real needs like commute, budget and safety. Saju is symbolic, and daily life runs on numbers. Saju does the least harm when you keep those two layers apart.
The hour branch: your two-hour birth block and your daily rhythm
If your animal is your year branch, your birth time is your hour branch. Mukwoon's "I don't know my birth time" questions exist to find exactly this two-hour block. A day has twelve blocks of two hours each:
- Rat hour (23–01): the Rat's night. A rhythm of deep thinking and good work nobody sees.
- Ox hour (01–03): the Ox working underground. Grit and sleep rhythm often become life themes.
- Tiger hour (03–05): dawn, when the Tiger heads out. Beginnings and courage sit in the hour pillar.
- Rabbit hour (05–07): sunrise. Sensitive senses and reliance on mood can grow.
- Dragon hour (07–09): the door to commutes and scale. A capacity to digest change attaches to the hour pillar.
- Snake hour (09–11): the Snake's morning, good for focus and analysis.
- Horse hour (11–13): midday. Visibility, meals and meetings tend to steer life.
- Goat hour (13–15): the afternoon slump and mediation. Like the Goat, you may put off tasks to keep the peace.
- Monkey hour (15–17): hands and mind speed up. It is a good time for side projects and skill practice.
- Rooster hour (17–19): deadlines and polish. Chasing perfection can turn overtime into a habit.
- Dog hour (19–21): the Dog's evening of setting boundaries. Family and principles become themes.
- Pig hour (21–23): feelings and rest. Like the Pig, abundance and overeating tend to come as a pair.
When answering the time-guess questions, be honest about whether you're a morning person, think a lot at night or keep deadlines in front of you. That narrows the candidates. If confidence is low, switch between the top two blocks and see how much the career tab moves. The sentences that don't move (cash management, sleep, writing things down) are the real action points. The hour pillar is also read for later life and children, so the lower the confidence, the more you should drop definite claims like "when you'll have kids".
Triple alliances, seasonal alliances and clashes as a map
Branch relationships are the raw material for trendy zodiac compatibility. A triple alliance is three animals coming together to grow one element:
- Monkey, Rat, Dragon: a Water alliance. Information, movement and learning grow.
- Pig, Rabbit, Goat: a Wood alliance. Growth, relationships and manners grow.
- Tiger, Horse, Dog: a Fire alliance. Recognition, speed and visibility grow.
- Snake, Rooster, Ox: a Metal alliance. Principles, expertise and decisiveness grow.
When friends or business partners form a triple alliance, the vibe is great, but if only one element gets amplified, so do its weak spots. A Water alliance may plan brilliantly and finish weakly. A Metal alliance may deliver polish but lack flexibility.
A seasonal alliance is the three branches of one season: Tiger, Rabbit and Dragon are spring Wood. Snake, Horse and Goat are summer Fire. Monkey, Rooster and Dog are autumn Metal. Pig, Rat and Ox are winter Water. When a family shares one seasonal alliance, the home mood can get stuck in one season. A house of summer types may have short nights and lots of talk. A house of winter types may think deeply and act slowly. Bringing in habits from the opposite season (journaling for summer types, morning sunlight for winter types) is easier than trying to change anyone's animal.
The six clashes are pairs that face each other across the circle:
- Rat and Horse: speed versus calculation
- Ox and Goat: stubbornness versus harmony
- Tiger and Monkey: pride versus wit
- Rabbit and Rooster: mood versus critique
- Dragon and Dog: ideals versus loyalty
- Snake and Pig: strategy versus affection
A clash isn't a sentence to fight forever. It's a mirror that shows each other's blind spots. If business partners clash, write role documents in more detail. If partners in love clash, build in a weekly schedule check-in. Content that translates a clash as "breakup" is often exaggerating for clicks.
A quick look at recent years: 2016 Monkey, 2017 Rooster, 2018 Dog, 2019 Pig, 2020 Rat, 2021 Ox, 2022 Tiger, 2023 Rabbit, 2024 Dragon, 2025 Snake, 2026 Horse. Twelve years earlier, 2004 to 2015, follow the same order. Saju years start at the Start of Spring, around February 4. If you were born in late January or early February, you may belong to the previous year's animal, so check the solar term. Our engine handles solar dates and solar terms. For a borderline birthday, enter your time and compare the results twice to be safe.
Career hints by animal alone look roughly like this: Rat, distribution and information. Ox, manufacturing and operations. Tiger, leading plans. Rabbit, design and brokering. Dragon, big projects. Snake, analysis and professional work. Horse, field work and media. Goat, education and service. Monkey, tech projects. Rooster, quality and brand. Dog: public service and security. Pig: hospitality and the arts. These are just year-branch images. A different Day Master or month pillar can flip the order. So don't worry if the career tab on the home page doesn't match this list. Your four pillars are a much sharper translator.
Please don't rush to label a child by their animal, or decide school or jobs by zodiac forecasts. Education and work come down to aptitude, health and family finances first. The point of this page is to unpack the language of year branches, so the branches on your Saju screen aren't "just animal names". If a character makes you curious, check its element on the Five Elements page, then see your own pillars in your reading.
Here's each branch's yin-yang and element at a glance:
- Yang Water: Rat · Yin Water: Pig
- Yang Wood: Tiger · Yin Wood: Rabbit
- Yang Fire: Horse · Yin Fire: Snake
- Yang Metal: Monkey · Yin Metal: Rooster
- Yang Earth: Dragon, Dog · Yin Earth: Ox, Goat
Yang branches lean toward outward movement. Yin branches lean toward building inward. Both Tiger and Rabbit are Wood, but Tiger is yang Wood that opens the forest and Rabbit is yin Wood that spreads branches, so their leadership and coordination styles differ.
Lay these next to the branches on your chart, and your chart gets clearer than any zodiac trend post. Earth has four branches (Ox, Dragon, Goat, Dog) because it handles the turn of the seasons. Earth animals aren't "animals that do nothing". They're the ones digesting things in the middle. Many people say presenting and moving go well in yang years, and tidying and studying in yin years, but again, your Day Master comes first. Don't just look at your year pillar. Write your month, day and hour branches side by side in the same table. Feeling four animals living in one body is where Saju begins.
